Couples ask about Amsterdam-Centrum
Frequently asked.
Is Centrum too touristy for a date?
The headline streets are, yes — Damrak, Leidseplein, anything within sneezing distance of the Bulldog. But the Jordaan, the Negen Straatjes, the Plantage edge, the canal belt south of the Westerkerk — all still very much real Amsterdam, and gorgeous on a date if you walk rather than tram.
Where do locals actually drink in Centrum?
Cafe Hoppe and Cafe de Dokter for old-school brown bars, Pllek's sister spots for natural wine, Cafe Chris in the Jordaan for a pre-dinner beer. Avoid anywhere with a chalkboard mojito menu out front.
Best canal for a romantic walk?
The Brouwersgracht at sunset gets voted Amsterdam's prettiest canal almost every year and they're not wrong. The Reguliersgracht with its seven-bridge view is a close second — easy to find, walk south from Thorbeckeplein.
Is the Red Light District safe to walk through as a couple?
Yes, well-lit and heavily policed. It's not particularly romantic but it's part of the city's history. The Oudezijds Achterburgwal during the day is actually one of the prettier canals once you ignore the windows.
Where to eat in Centrum without falling in a tourist trap?
Bistro Bij Ons (Dutch classics done well, Prinsengracht), Cafe de Klepel (French-leaning, Prinsenstraat), Toscanini in the Jordaan for old-guard Italian, or Tomaz on the Begijnensteeg for an unfussy lunch. Anything with photo menus outside, walk past.
