Amsterdam/Amsterdam-West
Amsterdam-West, Amsterdam
The Jordaan got the postcards, but West got the third-wave coffee and most of the actual cool.

Couples ask about Amsterdam-West
Frequently asked.
What's the Foodhallen actually like?
An old tram depot turned indoor food market — twenty-odd stalls, central bar, picnic tables. Loud and crowded weekends, much nicer on a weekday evening. Best for couples who can never agree on a cuisine. The Filmhallen cinema is in the same complex if you want dinner-and-a-movie under one roof.
Is Westerpark worth crossing the city for?
Yes — it's the city's best park-and-cultural-complex combo. The Westergasfabriek (old gasworks) hosts everything from craft beer at Brouwerij Troost to clubs like De School (now closed but the spirit lives on), bakery Bakery Institute, restaurant Mossel & Gin. Sunday strolls end up here naturally.
Best coffee in West?
Lot Sixty One on the Kinkerstraat is the standard-bearer — long queues, very good. Toki is similar mood. Scandinavian Embassy near De Pijp is a tram away and worth it. Coffee culture in West is taken almost too seriously.
Where to eat dinner in West?
Bar Spek for bistro classics, Wilde Zwijnen if you cross the IJ to Oost, Wilde Westen for natural wine plates, or Mossel & Gin for the namesake combo at Westergas. The Foodhallen if you want options under one roof.
How does West compare to the Jordaan?
Jordaan (in Centrum) is older, prettier, more tourists, more brown cafes. West is younger, scruffier in spots, with a stronger food and coffee scene. A perfect Amsterdam date often does both — drinks in Jordaan, dinner in West.
