Couples ask about Amsterdam-Noord
Frequently asked.
How do you actually get to Noord?
Walk to the back of Amsterdam Centraal station and take the free GVB ferry — it leaves every few minutes, takes about four. Buiksloterweg ferry for Eye/A'DAM/Tolhuistuin, NDSM ferry (15 min ride) for Pllek and the wharves. The metro Noord-Zuidlijn also stops at Noorderpark.
What's the deal with NDSM?
Old shipyard turned creative wasteland — graffiti, a ship-turned-hotel (Botel), Pllek built from shipping containers, Noorderlicht cafe with a beach. It's gritty in a good way, and the IJ-Hallen flea market on the first weekend of the month is the biggest in Europe.
Is the A'DAM Lookout worth it?
The view is genuinely the best in the city, the over-the-edge swing is a rite of passage, and there's a rotating restaurant if you want to eat with it. Book the swing slot ahead — walk-up waits get long. Go at sunset for the IJ glowing orange.
Best dinner spot in Noord?
Hotel de Goudfazant for an industrial-chic French menu in an old garage, Cafe Modern for fixed-menu fine dining in a former bank, or THT (Tolhuistuin) for a casual riverside bite. Pllek does decent food too if you want to stay in the NDSM mood.
Can I bike around Noord?
You can take your bike on the ferry for free and Noord is genuinely fun to cycle — quieter roads, the Vliegenbos forest, the dyke path along the IJ out toward Durgerdam. A cycling date out to Durgerdam village for lunch at De Koegelwieck is a classic.
