Couples ask about Amsterdam-Oost
Frequently asked.
What's special about Dappermarkt?
It's the most genuinely multicultural market in Amsterdam — Turkish butchers next to Surinamese spice stalls next to Dutch cheesemongers. Open Mon-Sat, busiest on Saturday. Grab a roti from one of the Surinamese stands and eat it in Oosterpark across the street.
Is Cafe Hesp really that good?
It's a 130-year-old riverside terrace on the Amstel that somehow still feels like a neighbourhood spot. Beer, simple bar food, a view of the river. Go early on a sunny day or you'll queue. The inside is just as nice when it rains.
Where for dinner in Oost?
Wilde Zwijnen (small plates, seasonal, Javaplein), Restaurant Bar Brouwerij 't IJ at the windmill for a beer-and-bitterballen kind of evening, Roopram Roti for cheap and brilliant Surinamese, or De Kas in Frankendael Park if you want a greenhouse-restaurant set piece.
What about Park Frankendael?
Quieter than Vondelpark and Oosterpark, with a 17th-century country estate at its heart and a city greenhouse-restaurant (De Kas) inside it. Lovely Sunday afternoon walk, especially if you tack on lunch at Merkelbach in the estate house.
Is the Tropenmuseum worth a visit?
Yes — it's an honest, sometimes uncomfortable look at Dutch colonial history housed in one of the city's grandest buildings. Pair it with a walk through Oosterpark afterwards. Not a date for the squeamish but a great one for anyone who wants to actually talk about something.
